Job Description
The Surgical Institute of Alabama is an Ambulatory Surgery Center located on the ground floor of the Vestavia Medical Plaza. The center has 6 operating rooms and 2 procedure rooms. The center welcomes patients to a soothing environment that does not imitate the rigors of rival hospitals. Patients are treated in a concierge environment from check-in to discharge. The center, designed beyond any minimal standards, has larger pre-operative and post-operative bays to give comfortable surroundings for patients and family members. Patients are comfortable during the pre-operative process and anesthesia initial assessment. As the evolution of healthcare continues rapidly toward the freestanding outpatient center our specialties of Neuro spine, Ortho spine, Orthopedics, Total Joint Reconstruction, General Surgery, Urology and Pain Management specialists advance care and customer service.
Basic Function:
The operating room staff nurse is responsible for providing therapeutic, effective patient/family-centered care according to physician order, in compliance with the philosophy of the organization, standards of practice, and regulations of governing agencies.
Accountabilities / Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop an individualized perioperative patient plan of care by implementing:
- Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes
- Transfer care as applicable
- Maintain radiation safety at all times in accordance with facility policies and procedures
- Provide a handoff report to other teammates that is accurate, concise and pertinent to the patient’s condition and response to care
- Delegate tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act (if applicable), state board of nursing or professional registration requirements, state laws, and job descriptions
- Document episode of care accurately, timely, completely, and legibly
- Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders
- Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care
- Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects
- Participate in the performance appraisal process
- Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships
- Maintain required competencies

- Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information
- Comply with all SCA and facility policies and procedures when providing patient care
- Actively participate in team meetings, trainings, and daily safety huddles
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- At least one year of OR / surgical nursing experience required
- Current state nursing licensure to practice in good standings
- Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within 90 of employment or documentation of current BLS/BCLS certification
- Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current ACLS certification
