Dr. Daniel M. Avery, III, M.D., is a distinguished orthopedic surgeon specializing in advanced procedures for the elbow, wrist, hand, and shoulder. With dual fellowships in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Hand and Upper Extremity, Dr. Avery brings a unique expertise to Birmingham.
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Avery earned his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Auburn University before completing his medical training at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He then pursued his orthopedic surgery residency at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Pennsylvania, where he served as Chief Resident and received specialized training in pediatric orthopedics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Further enhancing his skills, Dr. Avery completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut, focusing on shoulder surgery, and a Hand and Microvascular fellowship at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, with a particular emphasis on elbow surgery.
Dr. Avery’s clinical interests span a wide spectrum, encompassing fractures, ligament and tendon injuries, nerve disorders, and arthritis across the upper extremities. His expertise extends to treating athletes across various sports at all levels, from high school to professional leagues.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Avery is actively involved in research, having authored numerous scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters in Sports Medicine and Hand surgery. He prioritizes collaboration with his patients, tailoring treatment plans to achieve their desired outcomes.
